Dan - Analysis of 5 films

28 days later

- Opening sequence with shots of riots.
  • Transitions between disasters are straight cuts, increasing pace.
  • A lot of the filming is done without a tripod, increasing  the feel of panic.
  • Background music is not used throughout the riot shots, where as neither is the real footage sound.
  • Sound effects include T.V grains, some screams and shouting.
  • Original sound however is used while the troops are marching, for example when the fights break out the original what would be camera mic sound is not used.
- Tracking shots around the monkey laid along the table suggest secrecy, this is backed up by the little amount of sound and shots taken behind bars that use depth of field to reduce focus and make the background clear.
-Facial features represent emotions, camera closeups help the audience notice this.

Inception

- Most shots are either long shots or closeups.
- Close ups detail to the audience distress and other emotions through facial features. These are also used on characters that are of any importance. Exluding the beginning soldier, which begs the viewer to wonder why there's a soldier on the beach as we see his uniform.

- Sounds, crashing of waves, spinning of table top are all emphasized with volume. This could mean that it could be important trying to get the viewer to remember. Backed up by the close ups on the objects.
- Most sounds are dijetic.
-The longshot used on the long table help the viewer work out the relationship between the two characters, obviously there is some tension. We also get close ups on him eating with his clothes the same way they left him in as where he was found.

Shutter Island

- The opening scene uses firstly a medium shot, this shows the audience what clothes he is wearing, helping them figure out what era it could be. The cut goes in to a close up, letting us see how nervous he is making the audience ask the question; 'why does he dislike water so much?'
- The shot with both of the characters exchanging dialogue has quite a bit of spare frame, letting the audience see the setting they are on. It also further helps us figure out the date by seeing how old the ships design seems.
- When the character calms himself cuts become a lot less frequent, where as straightcuts were used to help the audience keep in pace with his anxiety. A pan is used instead when he walks through the hall helping us settle in with his purposeful change in mind.
- The main characters flashback has been made to seem quite surreal, even though they only used a straight cut to go in to the scene a vocal almost creepy sounding opera singing is used bridged from the conversation. This helps reinforce how damaged he is by the death of his wife.

- Everything has been purposefully made to look perfect, so perfect infact that it doesn't look real. This helps build the characters who's having the flashbacks personality for the audience.
- Lighting in this flashback seen has been made to look like it is coming from the manual lighting in the house. However it shines around the lady, giving her an almost angelic quality.
- Emphasis on the wind, setting the place.

Day After Tomorrow

- Opening scene, the camera tracks and lifts up through the sea setting the place. The music during this shot is very uplifting, trying to make the audience realise the beauty of the area taken.
- Close up on american flag, sets place.
- Emphasis on on wind and dialogue, backed up by clothing reinforces the extreme weather conditions.
- Shots are long, instead of cuts, characters are tracked and followed reflecting the characters relaxed state of mind.
- Close up on ice cracking signifies importance, as well as following the ice as it cracks.
- The tracking shot for the ice is slow, creating suspence.
- Distressing music is played throughout all the scenes bridged to build suspence until disaster happens.
- Close ups on peoples faces to get facial expressions and show emotion.

- Sounds of ice cracking and finally breaking are intensified.

I, Robot

- Beginning sequence holds textual information, however we are forced to ask 'why the bubbles'. It also ensures the viewer to watch on out of interest.
- Rare for a thriller, or classed in the genre, a POV shot is used, for us to see the girl in a medium/close up shot in the car helping us see her distress from her facial features and her body language banging on the car window. It is obvious to the viewer that the cars are sinking by now.
- The camera goes out of the POV to go to the main character in a close up so we can see his distress, followed by the realisation of the dream thanks to the emphasized sound of the alarm going off. We also see his sweat, a common thing to happen to someone waking up from a bad dream.
- A disconcerning and uncomfortable tune is used through the opening text to the end of the dream, as well as emphasis on the glass smashing sound as the camera dips up and down on the POV giving us the position of drowning. Letting us no he is being saved and opening up the narrative of the film.

Jacks

The Disaperance of Alice Creed:

-the beginning  of this film has no talking between the characters, this shows that they are well planned out and don't need to talk because they already know what they are doing, this makes us feel like something is wrong and they are doing something bad.
- There are very slow changes betweens scenes (slow pace) this is making us feel like we are knowing the characters better.
-The non-diegetic music in this opening sequence starts off at a slow pace and is very quiet, it then slows down more when you see inside the room they are building, it feels as if the music is making the characters relaxed but makes us feel quite tense because of the minor and diminished notes. When they entered the woods, strings are entered in the song, it makes us feel more because of the notes they use there too. They enhance the sound of the diegetic sound like the drills to make the audience focus on the sounds. The music stays the same pace the whole way through the beginning,
-They use a lot of long shots and Close ups, the long shots are used to make the room feel spaced and the close ups are used to make  us used to the characters.

The Six Sense:
-opening has a subliminal colour of red, the colour is used a lot in this opening, this is to show unusual things happening and anger in the boy.
-at the beginning of the film, the woman goes down the stairs and the shot is blocked slightly by a plank of wood, this shows things are obscure with her and something is wrong.
-the lighting is very dark, by having a light-bulb light up at the start is very clever because is makes us think that things are bright but really everything is not.
-the scenes are very slow to change
-it looks like they are very happy together, but the lighting shows that something bad is going to happen.

Jaws:

-the non-diegetic sound at the start of the movie is very very tense, it starts with the camera staying under the water as if was a p.o.v of the shark. It makes us feel nervous already before the movie has even started!
-It then breaks into a happy song being played by a man with a harmonica and everyone is having a good time on the beach, this changes the mood completely. this is a good example of contrapuntal sound.
-a woman then jumps in the water and man tries to go in with her, this is when the music starts playing again, this makes the audience feel more tense; even more so when the shot switches to a p.o.v of the shark.
-it then changes to a open view of the sea when she gets taken down, this makes it look like nothing has happened, and the man just feels like it is the open sea, it also can feel like now she is gone, the whole thing is empty.

Pulp Fiction:

-it stays on the same shot for a long time, this is to make sure we know the characters and make them know what they are like and get a first impression.
-They are talking about killing people and talking about guns, this is letting us know something is up.
-they use medium close ups and Close ups.
-They use a tracking shot on the man to show him more and what he looks like.
-he also talks about robbing a coffee shop and wonders why nobody does is, this shows us that they are letting us know something of what is going to happen.

Psycho:

-the opening music is non-diegetic sound, this music is very intense, it is letting us know that there is trouble already and we should be waiting for something wrong to happen.
-The first shot is a landscape shot of the city
-the lighting is clever because they go into a dark room but they are brightened up.
-the bright lights makes us think danger and violence is going to happen

Dan - Evaluation of Preliminary

I was pleased with the outcome of our work. Not only had we done the shots well, we managed to include some sort of narrative.

Camera Work

Shots were well placed, leaving little to no unneeded space unless it was done on purpose. We took full advantage of a range of camera shots including closeup, medium close up and long shots. We also included panning and tracking shots including a zoom in, giving the short film a better variety of shots and using the pace of the movements to help define the mood of the characters.

Continuity

Between our shots our characters costumes and sets had to be laid out to the exact way it was before. I think we did this well, although there were some mishaps with the male characters hair because we didn't film in a chronological order with the storyboard.

180 Degree Rule

Unfortunately we broke the 180 degree rule at one point when going from a tracking shot to a straight cut on the other side of our male character. We were unknowing of this, I always thought that the 180 rule only applied to two characters or more but thanks to this mistake I learn't otherwise.

Editing

I was pleased with the editing and transitions that were used throughout the film. Although we only used the straight cut and fade out at the end, reason being for a short movie any more might be over the top, it for some reason messed up. This could have been to do with exporting it from final cut in to another file format.

Sound

We used a song made by one of our group (not his original work). It worked well with the mood of the movie, and fit well with the 'love lost' atmosphere we were going for. It also worked well with the pace and camera work.

Lianne's Evaluation of the Preliminary.

Camera work
We used some good angles in our camera work, i really liked the angle that is a high angle pointing down on Jack taking his hat out of his pocket because it was really unusual. I also like the tilt shot on jack when he stood still after running for a while it shows he was thinking a lot and maybe nervous to enter the room. We did a variety of different shots such as LS, CU, over the shoulder shots and MLS. One bad thing i could say about our camera work is we didnt follow the 180 degree rule just before jack put his hat on.

Mise en Scene.
I think we had a very good level of continuity in what the actors were wearing and how the room was set out. we took a lot of pictures to help us remember and keep everything looking the same.
They girl actor was wearing a grey coat and this could reflect how she was feeling. All make up was keep minimal becasue we wanted it to seem as natural and realistic as we could.

Editing and sound.
Our editing was really good i thought becasue it was very smooth and we didnt have a jump cuts. We Made sure we always did match on action so out short film looked as professional and real as it could.
The Non-diagetic sountrack which was played in the background was the guitar from the 'Greenday' piece called 'September' We had no copyright issues becasue Jack recorded it himself on his guitar. The music was parallel to the scene and complimented it really well.
The diagetic sound wasn't too overpowering and the sound effects were done at the right volume levels.
I think our lighting could have been better because we had a few bits when it was a bit too dark.

Joe Gallon - Evaluation of preliminary

I think that our film was succesful, we didnt get many negatvive comments about it from the viewers and also got some positives. The was one problem with the film, we broke the 180 degree rule but I dont think this affected the overall film too much. The scene when we took two different shots of the male protagonist about to walk through the door, this is where we broke the 180 degree rule.

I think that the two aspects of the film that made it succesful were the editing and the variety of shot sizes and angles. This gave the viewer a good viewing experience and made the film interesting. The continuity of the editing was good. At the beginning of the film when there are 4 shots of the male running in quick succesion, I thought this was edited together very well and you can't notice the different shots. The tracking shots of the male that we did worked well, they gave the viewer an impression of how the character was feeling with shots of his body language and facial expressions.

With lighting, we could have done better lighting in some of the scenes, for exaple, when he walks through the door and there is a low angle shot of him with the wall in the corner. We could have used extra lighting in this shot. Although the lighting is not bad, we could have made it better with the use of additional lighting.

The Non diegetic soundtrack worked well on top of the film. This was Jack's own piece that he created on his guitar and I think that the tempo of the sound worked well with what our film was about.

Overall I think that our preliminary film worked and we edited the final piece together well with good continety and sound.

Joe Gallon

The Finished Preliminary!!!

Jack Partridge - Evaluation of Prelimanary

I thought our film was very successful, we didn't get many negatives from the viewers, only the fact that we bent the 180 rule. Many positives included, good variety of shots, good camerawork and a narrative which made sense.

Camerawork:
This was very good because we used many good shots of all type, we used close ups, medium shots and long shots, we also used all kinds of angles, low and high. We used panning when the camera started off at the actors leg and raised higher until it reaches the face and carried round the face.

Editing: I though we edited this really well because we made all the shots look exactly as they would have been if the actor did it all in one go. We also used a soundtrack that I made with my guitar which fitted to the film very well, the song I played was quite a soft, sad song; this fitted to the film well because everyone was sad. We had a fade at the end which would have worked very well but it messed up at the end-we don't know why.

Continuity:
We did this well because we made the colours of the female actresses clothes very dull (Grey) so this fitted her mood. We also had fallen chairs in the background of where they are talking, this obviously shows that the actress has been very stressed out and got very angry.

180 degree Rule:
We noticed something was wrong with the film when we watched it back and thought we should change it but we asked a teacher and they said it was alright so we trusted the teacher. Apart from the one bend, i wasn't broken at all.

Sound: We used a soundtrack I made, this worked well with the film because it was a sad song with a sad film, we made the song quiet during the speaking part to make the voices stand out.

Liannes 5 Thriller Openings.

The Birds - Opening 1

Camera
Wide shot of birds flying around.

No camera movement

Mise- en- scene
No information is given to the view except that we see dark bird flying around.

We can only see the silhouettes of the birds.

The birds are flying very fast.

The birds are flying from left to right. Our eyes are used to read from left to right therefore it seems first normal for us. After the title “the birds” the birds are starting to fly from right to left as well which gives it an unsettle feeling.

Sound
The sound is very important because it creates the sense of reality in this opening sequence without it the scene would feel weird to the audience.

The sounds of the bird are very loud and overpowering.

All the sound is Diagetic.

Editing
The scene is kept in one piece. There are no cuts in it.

The credits appear in the middle of the frame in light blue. Blue is seen as a calming colour so it contradicts with the chaotic birds flying around and being very loud.

The credits first come in as separated pieces and are put then together on screen. This could symbolise that the birds are not what they seem and the world of the people will fall apart.

The credits are positioned in the middle of the frame showing that they are important.

The birds are there to set the tone of the piece and the topic but the credits are more important in this sequence.

There are no effects such as fades or dissolves.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Opening 2

Couldn't Find the video. Did it in class.

Camera Work
CU of the old man opening the package, this shows it must be really important because its emphasises how careful he is being, showing him opening it at a few different CU angles.

Lots of the shots were either LS or CU. I think this was to show expression and detail for the CU and was an establishing shot for the LS.

Ls of him sitting all alone in quite a dark room makes him seem lonely.

When the female character is walking she’s shot from a tracking shot from behind to keep anonymity.

Mise en Scene
The old man is wearing quite posh old fashioned clothes which show he is quite rich.

He is shown in a room with lots of antiques and grand looking objects which also give the impression he is rich.

The girl who is walking is dressed all in black, I think this makes her look quite sinister and mysterious.

There is a massive contrast in-between the scenes which have the old man and the woman in – the old man is in a safe looking, quiet, lonely, room whilst the girl is walking in somewhere brightly lit, although the lighting is a greeny dull colour which makes the place (a train station suburb) seem quite scary. Also she is all alone in this subway which is unusual so it also add to the amount of mystery and lonliness.

Editing
The cuts are quite a slow pace making it seem although the man is in no rush.

There was good continuity as the characters where is exactly the same place following their movements from the cut before.

Sound.
The non- diagetic sound is an orchestra and when the old man is on the screen its quite gentle and has major and minor parts making you think hes quite helpless and lonely, and has things to be happy and sad about.

When the package is opened, the music turns more minor and builds up to a still picture of a woman. Then once the scene changes to the girl walking it becomes very powerful and scary. This give the impression she is powerful and not weak at all.

The diagetic sounds were emphasised quite a lot for example when the old man was opening the package, the sound of the paper and string tearing was very obvious and clearly one of the main things to notice.

Seven (se7en) - Opening 3.

Camera work
Everything is a CU or ECU

The camera is always shooting still shots except when there’s a tracking shot over all the books.
a lot of the shots are canted, eye level or over the head shots.

Sometimes there is shallow depth of field for example in the cuts with the book with the pages turning they show only the book.

No establishing shots, just CU shots making you instantly ask why the man is doing all these different things.
Only shows the persons hands keeping anonymity.

Mice En scene
Lots of writing and drawings in books and on paper

the man has plasters on his fingers, and his hands are dirty

Everything he does is quite slow and careful making him seem like this is important.

Makes it clear he is making something.

The shot of all the books shows that all the books are important.

Cannot see any surroundings or the location which makes you wonder who this person is and where are they because you cannot see anything about the person either.

Editing
some of the cuts are actually quite slow but the constant flickering of writing and other things going on makes it seem very fast.

Some of the cuts are incredibly fast

Some of the shots are taken with a different colour over it such as red.

The writing flickers a lot

Some of the important part are done in slow motion such as the page of a book turning, some of the shots are speed up.

there are credits shown over the top of a clip that’s being replayed

When the man is crossing out the words in the book in black pen it is shown normally and then reversed.

There’s a lot of dissolves

a lot of screen splits

A lot of flashing lights in between cuts

a lot of the cuts overlap.

Sound
There is no diagetic sounds only a non- diagetic soundtrack.

The soundtrack is parallel to the clip because the person who is making sometihng is cutting things and flicking through books and sewing things and the music has sounds in that sound similar.

Also the clip is quite jumpy and a fast pace so the music compliments that because its quite quirky and strange.

The only dialogue in this is 'you got me closer to god' and this is at the end of the intro in the soundtrack.

The credits are all over the place showing that the movie is quite chaotic and strange.

No Country for Old Man - Opening 4.

Camera
The opening sequence starts with wide shots of the landscape to establish the scene.

The first camera movement in the scene is a pan from right to left to let the audience know that something important is about to happen.

Our eyes are used to read from left to right. Therefore the pan from right to left is irritating for our eyes and makes us aware that there is something about to happen.

The camera than tracks to the car to show that the action of this scene will happen in the car.

The first medium shot of the scene is to show intimacy with the two characters.

The CU of the gas pistol shows that this is an important prop.

In the next scene the police man sits on a table and the camera track in on him making it obvious the audience is meant to focus on him.
High angle of the killer washing his hands.

The high angle shot showing the legs of the dead policeman tracks down to the shoes of the killer and him tacking the gas pistol, this also shows it is an important prop.

The POV of the driver following another car puts the viewer into the position of the killer.

The POV of a rifle aiming at animals indicates a change of scene.

The low angle pan of showing the dead people leads us into this new situation which contradicts with the peaceful atmosphere of the desert.

Mise-en-scene
The first shots where there is no people give a feeling of loneliness.

The sun rise over the landscape could symbolize the beginning of the story.

The peaceful images without any movements in them until the first pan contradict with the Narrator which talks about changes in society and brutality.

The killer is dressed in black shows that he is the antagonist.

The police officer can be spotted as being a police officer because of his uniform and the car.

The colours are mostly browns and rural colours.

Editing
Slow pace cuts.

The cut from the police station to the POV of the killer driving the car is linked through the editing to the killer without the editing it would be difficult to know who is driving the car.

No titles are shown in this opening sequence.

Sound
Narration of the policeman telling his story and his problems of dealing with crimes. This is Non- Diagetic sound.

We are aware that something bad will happen.  The voice-over narrates the story and adds meaning to the images.

Non – diagetic soundtrack used in the beginning.

The sounds of the killing of the policeman and the handcuffs dropping in the sink are really loud showing they are important. These are Diagetic sounds.

The siren sounding in the POV of the killer driving the police car tells us that he is driving the police car otherwise we wouldn’t know that it is a police car and  tells us that it’s the killer driving it because we know he killed the police officer.

The Reeds - Opening 5.

Camera work
LS establishing shot that’s tracking slightly.

Ls of a man dressed in black on a canoe

MS of a woman in the car showing she is an important character.

There’s a fast track of grass which could be the POV from an animal or something that’s running fast.

The man in the canoe is show from a distance or from behind which keeps him anonymous.

CU of the man in black holding a Gun showing that its an important prop. After the Gun has been shot there’s a LS of bird flying showing they have been affected from a long distance away.

Mise En scene.
the man on the canoe is dressed in black giving the impression he is the villain. As it’s a black cape it also gives the impression he is associated with death because the grim reaper wears a long black cape.

Quite a dark and gloomy and there are no other people around so it makes the place seem lonely.

The canoe is quite battered which we see in the CU of it.

Massive contrast between the scenes with the guy in the canoe and the scenes with other people in.

The Scenes with the car are quite brightly lit with lots of other people around making it seem happier and more normal.

The people dancing next to the water are all wearing white and lightly coloured clothes which give the impression that they are protagonists and may be quite innocent. They are also travelling along the river in a white boat. You can tell it’s the same river as the one the man in the canoe was on because it has the same yellow colours grass next to it. Although we can tell they were both on the river at different times because they are lit differently for sunlight and dusk.

Editing
Lots of fades

The cuts are quite slow in the beginning and they get faster and faster as the clip goes on Until it ends in the title of the film.

There is cross editing because there are two separate scenes which seem to be meeting  near the end of the clip.

Sound
Non- diagetic soundtrack playing, quite sinister and creepy high strings playing.

The diagetic sounds of someone breathing and the gun shooting are very loud so they show these points are important.

There is no soundtrack playing for about 4 seconds after the gun shot, just the sounds of birds squawking and flying.

After the birds flying and the sun going down the music goes lower and starts to be more powerful as it shows all the other characters and how they are dealing with this.

As the cuts get faster the drumbeats get faster and the heavy breathing of a scared woman increases as well.

There is little Diagetic sound after the gun shot only a few screams from women and heavy breathing. There is a short piece of dialogue right at the end.

The soundtrack is parallel to the clip.

- Sets the scene very well, like what the whole film will be about
- Very dark room but lighting on the gun to show that it is important (foregrounding)
- Great use of silence in the transition between the two scenes - One is quiet and one is very loud and the silence gives you time to ask questions about the significance of the characters in the first scene.
- Very blurred vision from POV of boys on the bike - This gives you a sense of chaos
- Ends suddenly with the use of silence after the crash from the lorry - Again makes you think about what will happen to the characters later in the film.

Storyboard and Editing.

After coming back from the Christmas holidays, we new exactly what we had to do - finish off the last parts of the filming and edit it all together. Because of a hiccup with clothes we had, where Dan brought the wrong hat. Though it was the same style and grey, it was a too light shade of grey affecting the continuity therefore forcing us to have to wait until after the Christmas holidays to finish some shots.

After looking back through the storyboard we had to cut a lot out, but at the same time make adjustments to already used scenes. 1 minute of filming was a lot less than we thought it was originally going to be, possibly because of the brief we had to follow, but a lot of idea's were cut out. We did keep these ideas for future projects though.

The first scene of the phone was not used, as we thought it would be more affective to start with the male actor running. We coupled this with quite a few cuts to increase the visual speed of the scene. It also made it look more interesting and dramatic.
On this storyboard, we originally planned for both of the actors to have an argument and the male actor walks out. We didn't do this, but instead used the fade transition in to the credits. We also didn't use the last suicide scene as not only did it seem a bit over the top and too dramatic for what we had already filmed, our film had already reached the 1 minute limit.

While looking back at the very closely finished video, we are very proud of the work we have done. We do joke about the acting, but were surprised at how well they did in terms of body language and other paralinguistic features. We were thinking originally at looking in to finding performing art students, but realised after a while this would make a lot of hassle, considering the Christmas holidays were coming up and it would be possible they may have auditions to practise for coming the new year. We couldn't risk any dropping out,
